OPINION: School: It’s not for business!

by Takhta Pandu Padmanegara

There was a conversation between teacher and his students in one of public school while they are studying PPKN:

Teacher: “Ok students, because we will face the PPKN’s test, each of you should photocopy these materials that I will give to you!”

Students: “Yes sir!”

Teacher: “Ok students, because I am very kind and don’t want to make you busy to make a copy, I have an idea, since I have a photocopy shop how if these materials you entrust to me, then I will make a copy for you?”

Students: “Yes sir! You’re so kind.”

Lecturer: “Good, because I make copies for you, so you should prepare the money to pay these materials. Ok?”

Students: “Yes, sir!”

Lecturer: “Oh yah, because I am very kind and don’t want to make you busy to write the questions, I have an idea, how if I make a copy for the questions, so you don’t have to write again the questions? Is it ok?”

Students: “Yes sir! You’re so kind.”

Lecturer: “Good, so you should also prepare the money for the questions. Ok?”

Students: “Yes sir, thank you for your kindness!”

Lecturer: “Ok, now before we continue our study, I have an announcement from our lovely Head Master, listen carefully.

In improving our school facilities and study environment, our school will hold a project to build new facilities to make our school better. To accomplish the project, each student from first year until third year should give donation minimal

Rp 50, 000,-. If there is any student that don’t give donation, it can be concluded that he/she doesn’t support our school to improve better and his/her score of each subject will be deducted.

Is it clear and understandable?

Students: …………”Yes sir!” (Only several students that answer the questions and the rest just quiet because they don’t know and still confuse whether now they are studying PPKN or Economic).

Education is generally understood as an effort that done by educator through direction, teaching, and practice to help pupils in developing process become a real human. Ki Hadjar Dewantara, a National Education Figure, defined education as an effort from parents to their children in purpose to improve their life.

It is very ironic that now school is one of prospective business in our country. And this concept has become a custom, or perhaps, a system that always done by every school in Indonesia. The concept like this has been giving a lot of contributions to poverty process of poor people. Now, it’s time for government to implement their plan, or their discourse to make our educational system better.

Improving of education budget will give positive impact to the poor people for giving better education to their children if the government also removing all money pickings that isn’t principle. If this phenomenon still continues, it is no doubt that poor people will keep poor and unintelligent. And our country will be known as discourse country. Negara Wacana, Indonesia!.
